Cody Gakpo leaves Gary Neville in hysterics during interview straight after Liverpool's win

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo sent Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher into hysterics with his post-Merseyside Derby interview last night.

Gakpo finally broke his Liverpool duck on Monday – scoring a tap-in in-front of the Everton fans to put the Reds 2-0 up. It had taken a while to come, but it was surely worth the wait. The goal put the cherry on a good personal performance for the Dutchman, and gave Liverpool renewed hope in their top four pursuit.

Having been one of the night’s star performers, Sky Sports were keen to talk to Gakpo out on the Anfield pitch at full-time. Turning up in the freezing night wearing flip-flops, the 23-year-old instantly endeared himself to presenter Dave Jones.

Then asked what he and Liverpool are targeting for the rest of the season, Gakpo answered back ‘to win every game,’ with a deadpan look back at Jones.

This brutally simple answer was too much for Carragher, Neville and the rest of the panel, who burst into laughter at Cody’s straightforwardness.

“You can’t do a lot more than that can you!” roared Carra. “That’s it isn’t it, simple!”

Gakpo finally announces himself at Anfield

It’s clear that Gakpo had no idea why his short answer was so funny to Carragher, Neville, Jones, Leon Osman and Izzy Christiansen. That’s what makes it even funnier.

During his time at Liverpool so far, we haven’t seen too much of this side of Cody. With the team struggling desperately on the pitch, the club have kept the usual insights into life behind the scenes to a minimum.

As a result, we as supporters haven’t been able to get to know our new man too well. Judging by this though, he has the potential to be a real fan favourite.

Bluntness doesn’t always go down well from footballers, but Gakpo manages to make it very endearing here.

Maybe it’s just because he’s taken a while to get going. Perhaps it’s solely because he’s just scored his first goal against a bitter rival. But last night felt like Cody Gakpo finally arrived at Liverpool.

As Carragher rightly pointed out during the game, the Netherlands international has the look of an incredibly tidy footballer. There were signs last night that his Liverpool teammates are started to tidy themselves up, too. Once they get on the same wavelength, Gakpo’s surely going to shine.
