Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo has told Jurgen Klopp how to get the best out of him as a player going forward.
Taking to an interview with the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old spoke of his difficult tenure since arriving at Anfield, and what he can bring to the table for the Reds.
“I’m an attacking player so I like to score goals and give assists,” Gakpo said.
“When you don’t, anyone would be lying if they said it didn’t affect them.
“You are judged on that so it’s something I need to get back as quickly as possible.
“It would be amazing to come into a team that won every game, but I don’t think it’s bad to come into this situation. During times like this you improve things you don’t know about yourself.
“We know we have to improve and start winning. We have so much quality, but we all have to step up as a team.’
The Dutchman went on to add: “Wherever it is [position-wise], the most important thing for me is to get on the ball, turn and run at opponents. That’s where I am most dangerous.”
Gakpo says he’s dangerous running with the ball
Although the Netherlands international hasn’t been able to hit the ground running since arriving on Merseyside, there has certainly been glimpses of his attacking flair.
In spite of the score-line against Brighton, the 23-year-old looked far more positive in a Reds shirt. Dropping deeper to pick up the ball, he would turn and run directly at defenders, causing the Seagulls’ back-line numerous issues.
This demonstrated signs of confidence, which will prove crucial in getting him up and firing at the top level.
However, at the moment, it is really difficult to judge the player fairly.
He has come in during a period where Jurgen Klopp’s team are the worst they’ve been for a very long time.
This hasn’t helped him to settle him into the squad, and various injuries have thus forced him into the starting XI.
Therefore, hopefully with the club’s turn in form (whenever that may be), we’ll see a turn in form for Gakpo, too.
