Insiders at Chelsea are becoming ‘resigned’ to the fact that reported Liverpool target Mason Mount won’t extend his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Mount is currently embroiled in talks with his boyhood club. But with things not progressing so far, Liverpool are rumoured to have been keeping a close eye on proceedings.
Now, as per journalist Mike McGrath, Chelsea are going to have a decision to make this summer. McGrath claims on Twitter that ‘some at the club’ are now starting to accept that the 24-year-old could leave.
The journalist doesn’t mention Liverpool in this instance. With the Reds being credibly linked though, there’s no question that this should be of interest to supporters.
Chelsea running out of time on Mount
Unless something drastic changes, it does seem as though Chelsea will have a big decision to make on Mount very soon.
Of course, contract talks do have a tendency to change dramatically. Mount being the Chelsea boy that he is, there’ll always be some doubt that he’s leaning towards an exit from West London.
But as things stand, that does look like being the case. And you can’t really blame him for that either.
With his club throwing money around on new signings, Mount is still on the same contract he signed back in 2019. Since then he’s played almost 200 games for the club and was pivotal in their Champions League win in 2021.
The England international is surely justified in his request to be among the top earners at Chelsea.
So far, that looks unlikely to happen. Given that he’s still a very saleable asset even with just a year left on his deal, they may have no choice but to entertain bids from rivals.
As things stand, Liverpool are seemingly the team most willing to submit such a bid. The Reds are in need of energetic midfielders and could also do with a healthy boost to their home-grown quota. Quite how much they’d value Mount at remains to be seen. Jurgen Klopp previously called him a ‘£60m player,’ but contracted for only a year longer, he’s highly unlikely to fetch so much.
Mount wouldn’t the glamourous signing some fans may be craving, that’s true. You know what you’re getting with the England star, though. If Liverpool could tempt him to jump ship from the club he’s been at for 18 years, it would be quite a coup.
