Robbie Fowler shares what he’s hearing from the Liverpool training ground

Robbie Fowler says he ‘can’t argue’ with the words he’s hearing from the Liverpool training ground these days. He does have some thoughts, though.

Robbie Fowler recently sat down to discuss the Reds with the Liverpool Echo. The great no.9 labels himself as ‘optimistic’ when it comes to Liverpool, always believing that things will go well.

But the struggles of this season are as clear as day. Liverpool can’t find any rhythm this season, struggling to control any games – even against opposition they should beat comfortably.

The downturn this season has been remarkable. This is virtually the same side that competed on all four fronts last season, playing every possible game and winning two trophies. They were only a couple of games from winning all four.

Fowler says that campaign could be exactly why Liverpool are struggling right now, however. At least, that’s what he hears from the training ground.

“They have struggled a little bit and I think all the talk coming out of the training ground is that the exploits of last season have maybe taken their toll,” he said. “I can’t sit here and argue against that.

“I can see the point but when you are a successful team, you’ve got to keep fighting anyway. It’s always about the next year.”

It’s pretty clear that last season has had a massive effect on Liverpool. Whether that’s physically or mentally, the team looks completely different.

They’re still trying to fight, of course, as Fowler says. But the real problem is that they don’t actually seem able to. Or at least, unable to fight properly.

The running can be there, the desire can be there, but now there are mistakes where there previously weren’t. There’s also a lack of any cohesion in the side – teams are finding it very easy to roll Liverpool over.

Jurgen Klopp has a few more months to find a fix but it increasingly feels like we won’t see one until the summer transfer window.
