Jurgen Klopp is heavily involved with a key decision at Liverpool, according to reports. The Reds will put their trust in him.

This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They report that Jurgen Klopp is one of two key people picking Liverpool’s next sporting director.

Julian Ward will step down in the summer after just one year in the role. His decision to depart was a complete shock to those at the club – and leaves things uncertain.

After all, Ward took over from long-time director Michael Edwards. He was essentially groomed for the role and Liverpool were able to survive Edwards’ departure because they had such an able – and known – replacement.

That won’t be the case this time around. One year is nowhere near long enough to find someone who ticks the same boxes Ward does. Instead, Liverpool must go outside the club to find their next sporting director.

The choice will apparently involve Klopp and CEO Billy Hogan. Hogan has taken on a far more prominent role this season as Mike Gordon focuses on the sale/investment process.

The pair will now find the next man to lead Liverpool’s recruitment. Though, the report stresses that any signings made this summer will essentially come as the result of Ward’s work.

That means any new director will primarily be for the 2024 January transfer window at the earliest. It does give the Reds a little time to sort this out and find the right fit.

We’re also happy that Klopp is involved in this. He’s the most important person at the club right now – we’d argue by far. He needs someone he can trust in the role and someone who delivers exactly what the boss wants.

It’s a smart move from the club to involve him and shows the incredible reputation he’s built in seven years.
