Liverpool have just one target left for this season, according to reports. It’s one they ‘desperately’ need to meet.
This comes from the Mirror. Journalist David Maddock claims Liverpool only actually have one target left this season after being dumped out of the FA Cup.
That task is fairly obvious – qualify for next season’s Champions League. That can be done in two ways, of course, given the Reds are still in this year’s competition.
But qualifying for the next one takes precedence over anything else – even going far this year. Maddock explains the Reds’ financial situation forces that. They can’t match the finances of certain other clubs without that Champions League income.
He explains they ‘desperately’ need to qualify for the competition next season. That means either securing a top-four finish or winning this year’s edition.
Liverpool have one aim this season
So which is more likely? On paper, definitely finishing in the top four, but that would require Liverpool to find actual consistency this season and go on a fantastic winning run. In some ways, it legitimately feels more likely that they scrape through a few European ties.
Especially as Liverpool have looked better in the Champions League than the Premier League this season. One awful, dreadful, horrendous display against Napoli aside.
Not that we’d be rushing out to put money on Liverpool lifting the trophy. We definitely do not recommend doing that.
The reality is that Liverpool almost certainly fail on both counts. Their form over the course of the campaign certainly suggests that. We have no idea how this side could overhaul a 10-point gap on fourth-place Manchester United. That just seems impossible right now.
So as desperate as they may be, Liverpool will likely miss out on the Champions League. Let’s hope all the money earned over the last few years has simply been stored away for a rainy day.
