Liverpool transfers: £80m player told he’s ‘made a mistake’ trying to force move

Liverpool target Moisés Caicedo ‘made a mistake’ this week, says Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi. The midfielder is in high demand.

Moisés Caicedo took an unusual step this week as he publicly requested a transfer from Brighton. The midfielder has a string of clubs chasing him, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all ‘well informed’ of his situation.

And it’s clear that he fancies a transfer.

“I always play football with a smile and with heart,” Caicedo said on Instagram. “I’m proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.

“I am the youngest of 10 siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador. My dream always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador.

“The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take this magnificent opportunity.”

Arsenal seemingly reacted to that with bids. The Daily Mail claims they’re putting in a second off of around £70m – but that Brighton want £80m.

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi claims this was a mistake from Caicedo, though. He hopes the player sticks around despite all the interest – and despite his desire to leave.

“We hope he stays with us until the end of the season,” he said, per the BBC. “In life you can make mistake.

“For everyone there are many solutions. We will see the best solution for him and for us.”

It seems virtually impossible that Liverpool pay £80m to sign Caicedo before the end of this transfer window. The only way they buy him from Brighton is in the summer – and that means the Seagulls hold strong and refuse a winter sale.

It does sound like that will be the case, unless someone makes a massive offer in the coming days. And when it comes down to it, Caicedo almost certainly isn’t worth £80m. He’s barely played at the top level, when it comes down to it, only breaking into Brighton’s team under a year ago.

Maybe things settle a little in the summer when other midfielders are available. Right now, though, this isn’t a transfer fight Liverpool should involve themselves in.
