Chelsea are now set to rival Liverpool to the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes in the summer, according to The Telegraph.
As per the report, the Old Gold ace has various admirers at Stamford Bridge, and the Blues have decided to join the race to land him at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old is also heavily wanted by Liverpool, after Jurgen Klopp came tantalisingly close to securing his services last summer.
Nunes is expected to cost around £44m, having joined Wolves in a deal worth £38m.
Graham Potter’s side have added the Portugal international to a list of possible arrivals, which also includes West Ham’s Declan Rice and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.
Chelsea set to rival Liverpool for Nunes
Every time Liverpool have needed to sign a midfielder, the club have told supporters that there isn’t anyone out there on the market who could improve Klopp’s starting XI.
Therefore, it was rather strange when the news emerged that the Reds wanted to try and sign Nunes again.
Having suffered a bit of a crisis in the middle of the park this term, it doesn’t make sense why Liverpool have waited an additional year before signing the Portuguese player.
By the time this comes around at the end of the season, fans will be getting impatient with the lack of additions arriving at Anfield.
This disgruntlement will be even worse if Chelsea manage to land the Wolves midfielder over Liverpool.
Nunes has rightly been labelled ‘unbelievable’ by former teammate Goncalo Santos, so it would be a travesty for Klopp to miss out – especially since he wants him on Merseyside so much.
