Liverpool transfers: Final update on 'spectacular' player is good news for Reds

A final update on Enzo Fernández is good news for Liverpool. The Reds need the Argentine to be available this summer.

There has been plenty of talk over the last few months that Enzo Fernández could leave Benfica. A transfer saga with Chelsea appeared the be the closest he came to joining a new club – but that went sour.

Not that the Blues were deterred. The Guardian reported just this week that Chelsea will have a second go at Enzo, hoping to sign him before the transfer deadline.

Record then claimed it was true that Enzo could leave – but Benfica were still demanding his release clause. Someone must front £103m to get him, essentially. Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid are all named as potential suitors.

Now, however, Benfica bos Roger Schmidt has moved to share what feels like a final update on Enzo. He doesn’t expect the player to go anywhere.

“I’m confident on Enzo staying with us, yes. I see him very happy, in great condition,” he said, per Fabrizio Romano.

“I don’t expect any player of our starting XI to leave the club now.”

Enzo Fernández and Liverpool

This is good news for Liverpool as they were never going to make a massive offer this late in the transfer window. Enzo isn’t their first-choice target, after all – that’s Jude Bellingham.

Romano claims the only reason Liverpool didn’t move for Enzo is because of an obsession with Borussia Dortmund’s star. The Argentine is an alternative and a ‘spectacular’ player in his own right, says Lionel Messi.

Enzo can be an option for Liverpool, then, if the Bellingham deal doesn’t work out. He’s a magnificent option, too, and one we’d be happy to see at Anfield.

Having that alternative only makes the Bellingham deal easier, too. Dortmund will know that there is actually a world-class option for clubs who don’t sign their player. They might hold most of the cards but that’s a pretty big one for Liverpool to have.

But it only works if Enzo remains with Benfica beyond this transfer window. Fortunately, it seems that will be the case.
