Liverpool don’t plan on making an offer for Weston McKennie, despite Juventus putting him up for sale.
That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Italian club have given Premier League sides the ‘opportunity’ to sign the American.
The offer is said to apply to ‘several’ English clubs, some of whom have reacted ‘positively.’ Liverpool aren’t said to be on that list though, with the Reds reportedly yet to show any interest at all in McKennie. Arsenal, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are claimed to be the sides most interested in the 24-year-old.
Juve are reportedly ‘keen’ to move McKennie along as a result of the financial issues surrounding the club at present. It’s claimed that any move for the USA international is likely to be a loan at this stage.
Liverpool stand firm on McKennie stance
Although Liverpool are in need of midfielders right now, Weston McKennie doesn’t feel like the answer.
The former Schalke man has plenty of qualities, that’s without doubt. He wouldn’t have earned himself a £20m move to Juve and starred at the World Cup recently if he didn’t.
McKennie was called ‘sensational’ by CBS for his World Cup displays, and his performances in Qatar are certainly a feather in his cap.
But he also hasn’t exactly found the going easy in a struggling Juventus team. In truth it has always felt like a club slightly too big for his ability.
In that respect, a move to Liverpool wouldn’t exactly ease things. Rather, any of the four teams named by 90min would seem to be a better fit, Arsenal included.
It seems that Liverpool feel the same way too. Yes, they need midfielders, but the Reds’ line has always been that they want the right player.
Having already been stung by one erroneous loan move from Juventus this season, they won’t fall for another.
McKennie has plenty of legs, and that’s what Liverpool have been missing in midfield this season. But he just isn’t of the required quality. Keep saying no, Reds.
