TalkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino has told Liverpool to sign Chelsea defender Thiago Silva on a free transfer.
Speaking about the 0-0 draw between the two sides from Saturday, the former Blues player – who supports the Reds – hailed the 38-year-old for his incredible display.
“Thiago Silva’s performance was just extraordinary at the back,” Cascarino claimed.
“I just laugh at someone who is 38, gets in a one-on-one with Nunez, who is lightning quick and, ok, might catch half-a-yard but he doesn’t get away from Thiago Silva, which is extraordinary. Just brilliant defending.
“He was outstanding again for Chelsea, Thiago Silva. He’s got [Paolo] Maldini in him. [He could] play until 40 quite comfortably.
“If Chelsea didn’t offer a contract to him at the end of the season there will be plenty that would, without a doubt. I would if I was in a management position.
“I would be saying, ‘I will take him for a year, absolutely’.”
When asked if he would take him at Liverpool, Cascarino replied: “Yeah, if I could get him for nothing and get him in, absolutely.
“He’s a fabulous footballer, he’s so composed, rarely gets in trouble. Everyone talks about his age and how you can get behind him and run at him, I can’t think of many who actually outrun him and get in behind. He seems to read the game so well.
“If they’re still doing it and it’s a one-year deal – go and have another year with them.”
Cascarino would love to have Silva at Liverpool
Despite his age, Silva has to be one of the best centre-backs in the entire Premier League.
He is an absolute rock at the back for Chelsea, and he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
If he’s available on a free transfer, Liverpool should jump at the chance to sign him – however realistic that may be.
Lavished by Reds midfielder Fabinho, Silva would be a huge addition to Jurgen Klopp’s back-line.
However, FSG have always been reluctant to bring players in over a certain age – despite their obvious talents and the ages of members of the current squad.
This is an extremely unlikely proposition, but what a signing this would be. He would solidify Liverpool’s defence.
