Chelsea are ready to bid for Liverpool target Enzo Fernández, according to reports. The Blues have already upset Benfica once.
However, it won’t be easy. Per Record, Benfica won’t sell for a penny less than his £103m release clause. It’s highly unlikely that they’d negotiate with Chelsea, either, after what happened earlier this month.
Again per Record, Chelsea agreed terms with Enzo after telling Benfica that they’d pay his release clause. Once the player agreed, the Blues went back to the club and tried to negotiate a fee. That greatly angered the Portuguese giants, with manager Roger Schmidt labelling them ‘disrespectful’.
Still, Chelsea aren’t massively deterred and could still sign Enzo this week.
Enzo Fernández – Chelsea and Liverpool target
This wouldn’t be great news for Liverpool. The Reds also like Enzo, with Marca and O Jogo both recently claiming there’s interest. Fabrizio Romano believes the only reason they haven’t moved is because of an ‘obsession’ with Jude Bellingham.
Signing both is prohibitively expensive, after all.
But if Liverpool are pushing for Bellingham, having Enzo available makes life easier. He offers an alternative should the deal fail, for one, while also offering a bit of leverage in talks with Borussia Dortmund. The Reds can point to an alternative deal to avoid desperation over Bellingham, essentially.
Chelsea could ruin that plan with a January deal for the Argentine, however. Ridiculously, this isn’t even the first time they’re doing this. The Guardian reported just last week that they’d bid for another Liverpool target in Moisés Caicedo.
Chelsea clearly want to boost their midfield, just like Liverpool. Every midfielder they remove from the market hurts the Reds, though, and makes the summer a lot more difficult.
As with Caicedo, we’ll just hope that they can’t get the Enzo deal over the line.
