Thiago shares reasons for joining 'perfect' Liverpool from Bayern Munich

Thiago has listed his reasons for joining Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020. The midfielder could have moved just about anywhere.

Thiago participated in What I Wore for BT Sport this week. He went through the history of his career through the shirts he wore – and those of his World Cup-winning dad.

Inevitably, the story of why he swapped Bayern Munich’s red for Liverpool’s came up. Thiago makes it clear that this was no routine decision – he put a lot of thought into the big transfer.

“It was a big decision,” he said. “The German league is awesome but we were winning it for eight years in a row – come on, need something more challenging. And that league was the Premier League.

“So which were the teams that, for me, were iconic in the Premier League? Which one has the better project, better coach, and Liverpool was perfect for that. I think it was a match from the first day.”

Thiago and Liverpool

Thiago remains arguably the biggest signing in Liverpool’s history. They’d never really brought in an established world-class player before, with everyone else taking a step up by joining the Reds.

Thiago, though, was unquestionably one of the world’s best midfielders when he arrived at Anfield. For £20m, he felt like an absolute steal.

He’s shown his quality, too. Thiago endured a difficult first season at Liverpool as he was one of many to battle injuries. Last season, though, he was absolutely incredible as the Reds came two games away from winning everything. The Spaniard was arguably the best passer on the planet.

It’s also great to see Thiago mention how Jurgen Klopp played a part in his move. He wanted to join a club with the ‘better coach’ and Liverpool certainly offered him that.

It shows the power Klopp has to bring players to the club and it’s something the Reds are fortunate to have. Now we just wish they’d take advantage of it more often.
