Jurgen Klopp will set a historic milestone when Liverpool take on Chelsea tomorrow. The Reds’ boss is enjoying a glittering career.

Liverpool statistician Ged Rea made an interesting note late last night. He sent out a Tweet to point out that Jurgen Klopp will manage his 1000th game in football tomorrow.

“Saturday will see Jurgen Klopp’s 1,000th career game as a manager,” he wrote. “270 with Mainz, 319 with Borussia Dortmund and Saturday will be his 411th with Liverpool.”

Liverpool host Chelsea at Anfield, of course, with Klopp taking to the dugout for the 1000th time. It’s certainly been a remarkable career for the German.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool

Klopp initially started a career in management while still playing for Mainz. His efforts there saw them promoted for the first time as he established them as a Bundesliga side.

Deciding he’d taken them as far as he could, Klopp would eventually move on and take over at struggling Dortmund. They were languishing in midtable back in 2008 but by the time the boss left, they’d won the Bundesliga twice.

No wonder, then, that his successor at Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel, calls him a ‘genius’. What Klopp achieved there was truly incredible, including a narrow defeat in the Champions League final back in 2013.

Of course, Klopp would leave Dortmund in 2015 and eventually take over at Liverpool later that year. He’s since established himself as one of the greatest managers of his generation, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Club World Cup, European Super Cup and Community Shield. All he’s missing is the Europa League – and he still made a final in that one.

1000 games nears, then, for a manager with nothing left to prove. Klopp certainly doesn’t give the impression he’s anywhere near done, however.
