Liverpool team news: Reds to monitor 'top' player vs Chelsea

The latest team news suggests Liverpool will monitor James Milner vs Chelsea. The veteran was excellent against Wolves in midweek.

James Milner returned for Liverpool against Wolves in midweek with a fantastic performance. He came in at right-back, excelling all game long in both attack and defence.

He earned a great review from Jurgen Klopp, who said it was a ‘top, top’ display from his vice-captain. And that immediately puts him in contention to face Chelsea.

Whether that’s at right-back or in midfield, we’re unsure. Klopp did confirm in his press conference, though, that places were up for grabs and that the Wolves game opened some doors for players.

However, the Liverpool Echo report that Liverpool will monitor Milner’s minutes for now. He’s been out for around a month, after all, and the Reds want to be careful with him.

While it’s still very possible that Milner features, we get the impression that he won’t start at Anfield. Fortunately, Klopp has other options to pick from.

Trent Alexander-Arnold almost certainly comes back in at right-back after having the midweek game off. Midfield has options, too, with Jordan Henderson have sat out the Wolves win.

But it will be at least a little tempting to keep Milner in. He showed fantastic energy and work-rate at Molineux – two things that have been lacking in midfield and at right-back this season.

We do imagine Klopp would prefer to see what Alexander-Arnold can do after a week off, though. Midfield will likely see Fabinho return to the holding role, too, with Thiago, Naby Keita, Harvey Elliott and Henderson competing for the midfield positions.

The big questions revolve around attack, then. Darwin Nunez still isn’t entirely fit and is in a race against time for this one. His absence would mean more rotating up top, with either Cody Gakpo or Mohamed Salah starting at centre-forward.
