Jhon Duran will move to the Premier League after links with Liverpool. It appears his asking price more than doubled.
US reporter Tom Bogert claims this deal is for around £20m in total. Villa will pay £16m up front, with the rest coming in add-ons. It’s a big step up from previous reports.
Back in October, journalist Pipe Sierra claimed Liverpool wanted Duran. Moreover, Chicago would accept around £8m for the player.
Of course, nothing came of that and Duran has now seen his value skyrocket. Villa will pay over double that initial price – suggesting this was a difficult transfer race to win.
Jhon Duran and Liverpool
We don’t know exactly how likely it was that Liverpool would move for Duran. Sierra’s claim was that the same scout they had look at Luis Díaz was now looking at the young striker. That doesn’t sound like a bid was imminent.
But we completely believe he was on the radar. Duran is only 18 but has already built a reputation for himself in MLS. That’s going to grab anyone’s attention – especially a team in Liverpool’s situation.
After all, Roberto Firmino is out of contract in the summer and this was before the Reds signed Cody Gakpo. Adding a new forward made a lot of sense, as shown by the Dutchman’s arrival.
£20m all-in, though, sounds like too much of a risk for Liverpool anyway. Duran has a lot to prove before that value is shown to be worth it – and that’s not the kind of player the Reds needed. They were after proven quality for that kind of money, eventually paying £37m for Gakpo.
But as ever, Duran will be one to watch in the Premier League. Who knows – maybe Liverpool try again some day.
