James Milner could yet be in-line to prolong his Liverpool career for another year.
That’s according to The Daily Mail, who claim that ‘nobody would be surprised’ to see the veteran sign an extension at Anfield.
Milner’s contract is up once again at the end of this season. Now into his eighth campaign at Liverpool, it’s widely expected that this will be his last. But if the Mail are to be believed, then that may not be the case.
The same reportedly applies to Roberto Firmino. Firmino will be in an identical position to Milner this summer. It’s claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s ‘regard’ for both players could see them stay on at the club, though.
However, the same unfortunately can’t be said for either Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Naby Keita.
The midfield pair are another two with contracts coming to a close. Unlike their more favoured colleagues though, both are said to be certainties to leave Liverpool once the curtain comes down on the season.
Time for a change, or time to double-down?
Should Milner stay on for another year at Liverpool, you can only imagine the outrage amongst certain sections of the fanbase.
But the truth is that the 37-year-old still has a lot to offer. It isn’t his fault that he’s having to be relied upon far too often this season. With the squad refreshed this summer, Milner could be worth keeping around.
It’s likely that the upcoming off-season will be a period of big change at Anfield. With plenty of players coming and going, the value of having an old head like Milner around can’t be overstated. Given the status he gives to the player, Klopp obviously feels the same.
With things getting rough at Liverpool, now would seem to be the worst possible time to get rid of your stalwarts.
Of course, there is another side to that argument. Things have gone pretty stale at the club over the course of this season. As a result, some would argue that now is exactly the right time to get rid of your stalwarts and bring in something new.
In the end, as it was last year, the decision will lie with the £120k-a-week man Milner himself. Firmino also appears to hold the final decision, with the club willing to keep him. For Naby and Ox though, the time has surely come to move on.
