'Klopp failed': Liverpool told what action they must now take to fix things

Liverpool have been told what action they must now take after Jurgen Klopp ‘failed’ to fix things. The Reds are in shocking form.

Liverpool were horrendous against Brighton on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp believes it was the worst one of his teams has ever played – that’s including Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.

And few could disagree with that. Brighton outplayed Liverpool as the Reds usually perform themselves against sides. It was nothing if not humbling.

The watching Garth Crooks wasn’t too surprised, it seems. He believes the 3-0 result wasn’t even the most worrying thing here – the performance was. It comes as a result of a Klopp failure, he says, and it’s one that must be fixed.

“If you’re a Liverpool fan you must be concerned,” he wrote for the BBC. “It wasn’t losing to Brighton that stopped me in my tracks but the manner in which they lost.

“I said after their defeat against Brentford that their midfield looked old and unable to compete in the way they were two seasons ago. Jurgen Klopp has failed to address this problem and Liverpool will continue to struggle until he does.”

Crooks is right, of course; we’re not sure anyone would argue against his point here. The midfield issue has been at the forefront all season but it was particularly noticeable against Brighton.

That’s because Liverpool don’t have a settle defence with Virgil van Dijk out. They also don’t have a settled attack, given Roberto Firmino, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz were all injured.

When the defence and attack are both struggling, you turn to the midfield for some control. To say that was lacking would be an understatement.

Liverpool couldn’t come close to winning the midfield battle at Brighton, with or without the ball. Change is absolutely necessary and we can only hope it comes soon.
