Pundit Craig Burley has singled out Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara for criticism after the Reds loss 3-0 to Brighton on Saturday.
Speaking for ESPN UK, the former Scotland international claimed the 31-year-old is an unnecessary luxury in the middle of the park.
“It’s been going on now since the start of the season,” Burley said.
“I thought the World Cup break might have helped, but it hasn’t.
“We talked about Thiago the other week, in a team that’s not dominating and not playing well, he’s just a luxury.
“I can’t see them turning this around quickly, I can’t.”
Just last week, the pundit said Thiago is a ‘bugbear’ of his, suggesting his ‘fancy’ play is getting a bit boring.
Thiago is a luxury for Liverpool?
At the moment, Thiago isn’t the player pundits should be criticising in the middle of the park for Liverpool.
Although it is not his job, the Spaniard has taken on the greatest defensive duty in the side’s midfield, alongside his offensive playmaking role.
On the other hand, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have been far less useful in recent weeks.
Neither player looks like making a tackle, and they don’t seem able to retain possession very well – causing problems for the Reds defensively.
Although Thiago, who signed for Liverpool for £20m, makes mistakes, at least he contributes far more than anyone else in the middle.
If anything, he is the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s team-sheet – and deservedly so.
Therefore, although he is now 31 years old, he can still do a job for the Merseyside outfit for another few years at least.
