Ruben Neves to Liverpool looks more likely after Wolves struck a £15m deal for his potential replacement. The Reds reportedly want him.
Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter on Sunda to ‘confirm’ that Wolves had struck a deal with Flamengo for Joao Gomes. Now, Gomes is actually someone previously linked with Liverpool but he’ll be heading to the midlands.
“Brazilian midfielder João Gomes will fly to England in the next hours in order to undergo medical tests and sign as new Wolverhampton player,” wrote Romano. “Here we go, it’s confirmed.
It’s a deal that could have positive consequences for Liverpool.
Ruben Neves to Liverpool
And so Wolves signing a midfielder here is unquestionably positive for the Reds. They’d have an extra midfielder, after all, and letting go of Neves becomes a lot easier.
We’d argue that the deal now looks a lot more likely in light of this news. But is he worth it?
We think he is, yes. Neves is still somehow only 25 years old and on around £50k-a-week at Wolves, per Capology. His value is declining because of his contract winding down, too, meaning Liverpool might find a steal here.
And it’s not exactly a secret that Liverpool need a new midfielder. Neves would bring experience, his prime years, and a fantastic passing ability to the squad. We imagine he’d be right in the starting XI before the season is out, given the Reds’ recent form.
There’s still a long way to go on this one, of course, but things look more likely than they did this morning.
