Martin Keown raves about Liverpool star Cody Gakpo

Former Arsenal player Martin Keown has raved about Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, having compared him to Premier League legend Thierry Henry.

Speaking for the BBC ahead of the Reds’ match against Brighton yesterday, the pundit claimed Jurgen Klopp has a ‘special player’ in the 23-year-old, who only arrived at Anfield just two-weeks ago.

“Liverpool’s front players don’t press nearly as much as they used to,” Keown said.

“The philosophy is the same, but the application isn’t. They continue to use a high line but how many one-on-ones have we seen? The most in the Premier League. The adjustment hasn’t been made.

“Cody Gakpo will play centrally today though, and I do think he is a special player. He’s a Thierry Henry type player, he’s got that stature: he’s quick, he’s strong.”

Although he’s got a long way to go until he reaches the heights of Henry, Gakpo certainly has huge potential.

The 23-year-old has only just arrived on Merseyside, so it’s incredibly hard and unfair to judge him on two appearances for the club.

In the Eredivisie, the Dutchman was sensational. In 14 league games this season, the winger bagged nine goals and 12 assists.

He even proved he could perform on the globe’s biggest stage at the World Cup. Scoring three times for the Netherlands, the youngster confirmed he is more than capable of playing in the Premier League.

Only time will tell for Gakpo, but he certainly hasn’t arrived at a good moment, with Liverpool currently in tatters.

When the side eventually regains its form, we will be able to see a plethora of the 23-year-old’s talents.

But this looks a long way off with the way things are going at Anfield.
