Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol was left very impressed by Ibrahima Konate's performance vs Brighton

Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol has claimed Ibrahima Konate was the only bright spark against Brighton, as the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s XI were abysmal.

Speaking on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel about the Reds’ 3-0 loss, the former Scotland international hammered the team’s performance.

However, he did identify the one positive on display at the Amex Stadium.

“I’m not sure Liverpool have had a worse performance under Jurgen Klopp,” Nicol said.

“From start to finish, they were never at the races. They were always second to everything, they couldn’t pass the ball, they weren’t together.

“I mean, you name it, it went wrong.

“I guess the easiest thing for me to say would be to say that Konate, of the eleven players on the field, he was the only one that actually showed what he’s made of – not what he’s made of but showed what he is.

“Everybody else was so far off the pace and just as I said, not at the races.

“Just physically and mentally, they look all over the place.

“I mean, I’m struggling here because it was so bad. I’m trying to think of another positive other than Konate and I really can’t – there just wasn’t one.”

Nicol praises Konate, but slams Liverpool

Although he has had a few rough performances thus far this season, on the whole, Konate has been very reliable for the Reds since arriving on Merseyside in 2021.

The 23-year-old has struggled with a knee injury this term, meaning he has only played four Premier Leagues and two Champions League matches.

However, during those games, the Frenchman has illustrated why he should be Virgil van Dijk’s partner at centre-back.

Whilst Liverpool fans have been amazed by the youngster’s talents since he joined the club, other football supporters only really became aware of Konate’s quality at the World Cup.

The defender was absolutely fantastic against Morocco in the semi-finals, so it was a shame to see him on the bench for the final against Argentina.

Hailed by van Dijk as an ‘incredible player’, Konate is the future of Liverpool’s defence alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Hopefully the club can get out of this rut, as it would be a disaster to see the 23-year-old get picked up by a winning team.
