Tyler Morton says he’s changed part of his game after early criticism at Liverpool. The midfielder is on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Liverpool announced a new long-term contract for Tyler Morton on Wednesday. The 20-year-old has tied the rest of his youth to the club after excelling on loan in the Championship.

It’s been a brilliant start to the campaign for Morton. He instantly took to life with Blackburn Rovers, regularly starting for the side in third place right now. The midfielder has become an established professional.

So what changed? Morton always looked like a young player at Liverpool, physically smaller than most and a little lightweight. The technical quality was unquestionable but he lacked that physicality.

Well, Morton says he heard that criticism and deliberately worked on it. He’s now ready to compete at senior level.

“I think physicality is the main one for me,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “I think I’ve been questioned on that in recent years because of my stature and stuff like that.

“But I think I’ve coped with it extremely well. I needed that to go out and enjoy my footy – get smashed about and just enjoy the rough side of the game.

“I’ve done that and I’ve coped with it very well. Now I’m maturing as a footballer and I’m going to look to carry on progressing.”

It’s fantastic that Morton took criticism on board and improved. That’s a sign he’ll make it at the top – especially as he can consistently meet what’s asked of him.

We think Morton has a future with Liverpool, too. The youngster can position himself to replace James Milner in the squad as that reliable, consistent option in midfield.

Dropping into the Championship and holding your own is incredibly difficult. It becomes even more challenging when you face the pressure up at the table’s peak. Morton, though, handles it well.

The new contract shows what Liverpool think of him. They see a future, if he can keep adding to his game and excelling. We think he’s got what it takes.
