Chelsea will now rival Liverpool for Moisés Caicedo, according to reports. It comes after an embarrassing pursuit of Enzo Fernández.

This comes from the Guardian. They claim that Chelsea are now in the race for Moisés Caicedo.

They’ve decided to go for the Brighton midfielder after failing to get Enzo Fernández. The Blues appeared almost certain to sign the player, only for their pursuit to blow up spectacularly.

Record reported that despite agreeing on terms with the player, Chelsea went back on their plan to pay his release clause. They’d told Benfica they would, however, before returning with an intention to negotiate.

That angered the Portuguese giants greatly, leading to manager Roger Schmidt calling the pursuit ‘disrespectful’ in a press conference. He then said on Wednesday that the deal was off.

Thus Chelsea need a new target and Caicedo is their man. Liverpool, though, stand in their way.

Moisés Caicedo and Liverpool

The report names Liverpool as also interested in Caicedo. While it doesn’t go into more detail than that, it’s in line with reports from recent days.

The Mirror, for instance, believe the Reds want him. He’d cost around £60m should they pursue the deal – a really tempting amount for a player we like a lot.

But Chelsea boss Graham Potter likes the player a lot. He called him ‘fantastic’ back when he managed him at Brighton and he’d almost certainly have the upper hand in any fight.

However, there’s another factor in play here. The report mentions how Chelsea would like to sign Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in the summer but the Blues don’t lead either race. Liverpool have been linked with both and are said to lead the race for at least one.

Signing Caicedo, then, could well be Chelsea admitting defeat in those battles. Liverpool would then have at least a marginally easier go of it for either player.

Caicedo would be a fantastic signing but in the grand scheme of things, this might be one to leave for Chelsea.
