Former Ajax manager Aad de Mos has claimed winger Cody Gakpo may have made a mistake by joining Liverpool.

Speaking with Soccernews.nl, the 75-year-old suggested that it may have been the wrong time for the Dutchman to make the move to Anfield.

“He will come at a time when the team is disappearing a bit,” he said.

“The spirit is gone and the position is no longer in the top five… Just like Chelsea. Maybe just a little too late to rejuvenate.

“Yes, then you also get all that misery, perhaps with a manager who is about to leave.

“It is not the right time that so many young players are joining: ‘we are going to rejuvenate the team and we are not looking for the first five places there’. So, I don’t know if the time is right to go to Liverpool.”

Mistake for Gakpo to join Liverpool?

Whilst you can kind of see where the former PSV Eindhoven boss is coming from, he is also looking at the situation from the wrong angle.

The arrival of Gakpo is Liverpool rejuvenating the team. This means he will be given a larger role and greater responsibility, providing him with the opportunity to show what he can do at the top level in the Premier League.

If the Reds were not going to enter the transfer market and bring in any exciting additions going forward, this would be the completely wrong approach for the club to take.

Having arrived at Anfield in a deal worth an initial £37m, the 23-year-old has the opportunity to help get Jurgen Klopp’s side back on track.

However, the biggest issue didn’t necessarily lie with the attack, as the club are in desperate need of midfield additions this month.
