Liverpool have rejected the chance to sign Brighton winger Leandro Trossard after becoming ‘irritated’ with his agent.
That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Speaking on the Last Word On Spurs podcast, Jacobs said Trossard’s agent had approached the Reds about a January move to Anfield.
“The first thing to say with Trossard is that he wants a move away, no specific preference and his agent has been working extremely hard to fuel interest,” the journalist explained.
“He went to Tottenham, he went to Chelsea, he went to Liverpool, he went to Manchester United and he went to Newcastle United. Liverpool and Manchester United dismissed it, even as I understand it got a little bit irritated by how much on the agents side was being leaked about interest in his client.”
Trossard crosses himself off Liverpool’s list
It would be interesting to hear whether Liverpool ever held genuine interest in a deal for Trossard.
On the face of it, the Belgian wouldn’t be a typical signing for the Reds. At twenty-eight he’s a little older than the kind of player Liverpool tend to target.
However, he could actually be a smart little signing. Having moved for Brighton for around £15m in 2019, Trossard is coming into the last six months of his contract.
The Seagulls do hold an option to trigger an extra year, but it seems he’ll be allowed to leave this month.
Given his contract situation, it’s possible that the Belgium international could be let go for a knockdown fee, too. Trossard is Premier League proven and has 24 caps for his country. It isn’t every day a player like that comes on the market.
The former Genk man also has form against Liverpool, lest we forget. Trossard’s five goals in seven games against the Reds make Liverpool the favourite opponent of his career so far. Who could forget his famous hat-trick at Anfield earlier this season?
Even just to stop him scoring against them, maybe it would be worth the fee!
Unfortunately for Trossard though, his agent now looks to have made that an impossibility. It seems likely that the Brighton man will get his move over the next three weeks, but it won’t be to Liverpool.
