‘He’s happy’: £103m player won’t be leaving in January, could give Liverpool chance in summer again

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt gave an update on Enzo Fernández this week. It’s one that should be music to Liverpool ears.

There has been plenty of drama surrounding Enzo Fernández in recent weeks. The midfielder enjoyed a brilliant World Cup, propelling himself into the spotlight.

That instantly brought further transfer interest in the 21-year-old and a move to Chelsea appeared close. However, things took a serious turn last week as that move collapsed.

Enzo reportedly asked for the move and went AWOL from Benfica. Manager Roger Schmidt criticised the player publicly, saying there will be ‘consequences’. But that’s not all he said.

Schmidt also laid into Chelsea for the way they went about trying to sign Enzo. He called the pursuit ‘disrespectful’ and suggested they’d tried to unsettle the player to force a transfer.

We took these as positive signs for Liverpool, who also reportedly want Enzo. And now another update from Schmidt essentially confirms the positive news.

Enzo Fernández update

“The issue with Enzo is closed,” Schmidt told a press conference on Monday. “There’s no issue anymore.

“He is our player, he is in a very good condition and he is training well. He is happy, so he’s part of the squad and is a key player. So I think I have already said everything about it.”

It certainly sounds as though Enzo is staying with Benfica, then. He’s not trying to force a move, is happy with the club, and all seems rosy.

Marca and O Jogo both claim Liverpool want him, too. Honestly, there have been reports of the Reds’ interest dating back months and there appears to be something in it.

However, Jude Bellingham remains the presumed no.1 target and we imagine a move for Enzo only happens if that one collapses. Enzo moving this month, then, would be a minor disaster for Liverpool. They’d lose their alternative before they can really do anything about it.

But if the Argentine is staying with Benfica, Liverpool’s summer becomes a lot easier. Hearing that he’s settled at his club is music to Red ears, then.
