Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler would consider leaving the club to join Liverpool this summer.
Zieler has played almost 300 games in two different spells at Hannover, but as per Bild he now finds himself in a contract standoff with the club.
His contract is currently due to end once the Bundesliga 2 season comes to a close this June. However, Bild report that a one-year extension will then be triggered.
This is reportedly a point of contention for Zieler, who is claimed to be looking for a longer extension. Despite his importance to the club – he’s the current captain – Hannover are yet to open talks.
As a result, it’s claimed that Zieler may look elsewhere. Liverpool are mentioned as a potential suitor here, and the goalie would reportedly be interested, despite his ‘love’ for his current team.
Obviously, any Liverpool move would see the World Cup winner play as back-up to undisputed No.1 Alisson Becker.
Zieler a good option for Liverpool
This perhaps isn’t as straight forward as it might seem. To a lot of Liverpool supporters reading, it would appear an obvious decision to leave Hannover for Liverpool.
But that would be to ignore the history that Zieler has with the club. They were the team he joined having left Manchester United as a young goalkeeper in 2010.
Having spent six years playing for Die Roten, he then had spells at Leicester City and Stuttgart, before returning in 2019.
He won the World Cup as a back-up to Manuel Neuer whilst at the club in 2014.
The 33-year-old would also have to accept being a back-up ‘keeper as opposed to a starter. For Zieler, this wouldn’t be a new phenomenon, though. He was brought in as a No.2 at Leicester and also spent 2020/21 on loan at Koln, playing just once.
So, in comparison, the back-up job at Liverpool looks quite cushy. As the Reds prepare to potentially lose Adrian and Caoimhin Kelleher this summer, Zieler might be the ideal option.
