There’s been a twist in Chelsea’s potential deal for Enzo Fernández, according to reports. It may re-open the door for Liverpool.

This comes from Record. They claim that Enzo Fernández could now remain with Benfica beyond the January transfer window.

That’s because Chelsea, who are pushing hard to sign the player, won’t pay his release clause. Benfica refuse to sell Enzo in this transfer window unless someone triggers that clause, however.

That would call for a £103m bid but the Blues don’t want to pay it. Interestingly, Benfica now feel this is Chelsea going back on their word and are disappointed in their ‘new’ stance.

After all, they’ve been in negotiations for some time and it appears they allowed Enzo to talk with Chelsea. Now, though, the deal could be off.

Enzo Fernández deal

Liverpool have been linked with Enzo for some time now. Before the World Cup hype, even, where the Argentine exploded into one of the best young midfielders on the planet.

We were calling for Liverpool fans to pay attention on Argentina’s first game – anyone who did saw a world-class prospect in action.

But even recently, Marca and O Jogo both claimed that Liverpool would move for Enzo. It’s just that Chelsea jumped in with what appeared to be a massive offer.

Now, we don’t expect Liverpool to move this month. Jude Bellingham is their primary target, by all accounts, and paying £100m+ for Enzo would jeopardise that deal.

But if the Argentine is still up for grabs in the summer, the door is well and truly open for Liverpool. Benfica could be willing to accept less after the season, while we still believe Enzo is the best-possible alternative to Bellingham.

We have believed that the 21-year-old was off the table and Chelsea-bound. Now it seems that Liverpool can keep him on their shortlist for what promises to be a huge summer at Anfield.
