‘Appreciated’: Liverpool have been watching £50m PL player for a long time now – Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool are long-term admirers of Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, and could make a move for him.

That’s according to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claims that Nunes is on Liverpool’s list of midfield candidates for next summer.

“Liverpool are monitoring Matheus Nunes alongside other candidates for the summer transfer window. He’s always been appreciated, already when he was at Sporting [Lisbon],” said the journalist.

“The main focus remains Jude Bellingham, Nunes is one of the midfielders they like; but nothing will happen in January for Nunes.”

Liverpool looking at Nunes once again

By now, it’s clear that Liverpool are keen to sort out a deal to bring Nunes to Anfield next summer. This morning, The Telegraph have even gone as far as saying that an agreement has already been made – for £44m.

Whether that’s reliable information or not, we’ll have to wait and see. But from the noise surrounding it, the interest from Liverpool seems genuine at the very least.

The fee itself seems more or less sorted. Although Sky Sports have claimed that Wolves will be looking for closer to £50m to let the Portugal star go.

Questions need to be asked

All of this begs the question as to why the Reds didn’t approach Nunes last summer, when he was leaving Sporting.

Liverpool’s need for a midfield signing was as great six months ago as it is now. The 24-year-old appeared to tick plenty of boxes for Jurgen Klopp and could have bedded himself in by now.

Instead, Liverpool allowed Wolves to sneak in and take Nunes. Rather than Klopp and co missing out on the back of player’s decision though, it appears that a call was made by the club to stay away from negotiations. Why? Who knows.

If the transfer ends up happening, it will be no less frustrating. Liverpool’s season has been wrecked by their refusal to reinforce the midfield last year. Should a player who was available for less money arrive a year later than billed, serious questions need to be asked.

One final thing to note is that there isn’t any wiggle room on signing Nunes during this month. It isn’t a case of Wolves not letting him go – the Brazilian born midfielder has already played for two clubs during 2022/23. FIFA rules state that it’s prohibited to play for three in the same season. Then again, Liverpool have navigated that rule before. Javier Mascherano, anyone?
