Liverpool owner John Henry was booed Boston this week as he took his seat at Fenway Park. Fans are frustrated for familiar reasons.
John Henry owns Liverpool FC, of course, but they’re far from the only sporting side he owns. Henry, through FSG, also has Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox and the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins in his name.
And that put him in a strange position this week. The Penguins travelled to Boston to play a game at Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. It meant Henry was in Boston, in a stadium for the team he owns – but to support the visiting team.

However, that is not why the resident Bostonians chose to boo Henry when he took his seat. They were voicing frustrations that are all too familiar for Liverpool fans.
John Henry booed in Boston
Per the Liverpool Echo, fans of the Red Sox are furious with FSG after falling behind their rivals. They saw the team consistently fail to land key targets in recent years – and lost their best player in the process.
The reason? Well, fans believe FSG are tight-fisted and unable to compete with those that spend. Exactly the same accusation thrown at them by many Liverpool fans.
It’s a strange situation, then. Henry and FSG have three massive teams but appear incapable of competing financially.

That’s perhaps a little harsh on the Liverpool side of things, given how successful the team has been in recent years. However, the need for a rebuild will truly put their ability to compete to the test in 2023.
As things stand, though, Henry is getting it from all corners. His desire to find investment in Liverpool shows recognition of his struggles but that investment must arrive.
Otherwise, he will end up getting booed on two different continents.
