Darren Bent has claimed that he’s started to feel sorry for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, as he endures a mini goal drought.
It has only been four games for Liverpool that Nunez has failed to find the net in. But given the sheer volume of chances the Uruguayan has missed in those games, it has felt like a lot longer.
Either way, TalkSPORT pundit Bent still believes that Nunez has it in him to turn things around at Liverpool.
“Do you know who I do feel sorry for for Liverpool? I don’t know if it’s striker’s union, but Darwin Nunez,” said the former England man.
“This guy will do everything right until he gets to the last bit. He scored one good goal, which he was offside [against Brentford], but it’s a good finish. But he just gets opportunities and he’s almost seems to get caught in-between. He goes round the goalkeeper and manages to hit the only place where here’s a defender on the line.
“For someone who’s movement is that good, who’s that quick, it will turn for him.”
Keep your head up, Darwin
Having been widely ridiculed since his arrival in England, this is a nice change of pace for Nunez’s perception. Rather than laugh at his profligacy, Bent is seeing the good in what the 23-year-old is doing. And he is doing a heck of a lot of good.
When you look at some of the chances Darwin has missed over the last two weeks, that can sometimes be hard to accept.
But the fact is that he still always looks like Liverpool’s best chance of a goal. Every game he impresses with his speed, power and ability to sniff out chances.
Nunez’s touch has improved immeasurably since his summer arrival and he now looks to be in-tune with what is expected of him during matches.
And yet, the finishing touch is still missing. As Bent points out, this is perhaps the easiest thing to rectify in a striker’s game. If the rest of the tools are there, sticking chances away shouldn’t be too hard a thing to work on.
So, perhaps the most important thing for Nunez is to keep his head up and keep going. If his confidence dips, he’ll stop doing the things which are making him such a threat. The former Benfica man just needs to get his finishing up to scratch and he’s going to be a monster.
