Jurgen Klopp says one part of Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo deal was ‘perfect’. The Reds officially signed the player yesterday.
Liverpool surprised everyone when they completed a deal for Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman was linked heavily with Manchester United, after all, and it felt as though they led the race here.
But then one evening, the Reds jumped in and completed a deal. Gakpo is now officially a Liverpool player with the opening of the January transfer window – and we’re very excited.
Jurgen Klopp, though, wanted to stress that this wasn’t a sign of Liverpool making several January signings. Gakpo was an opportunity they couldn’t afford to miss, it seems, and the boss points to one ‘perfect’ aspect of the deal as key.

“We always sorted our situations and it is a big part of my philosophy, really working full of faith and trust with the players we have and not constantly questioning them by telling them we need another player for that position or that position,” said Klopp, per The Times.
“With Cody, it is obvious. Not only because we have that void [on the left] now, the quality he has, the timing is perfect — if we waited until the summer he would be more expensive or someone else would have picked him.”
Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo deal
So that about sums up Liverpool’s transfer dealings. They moved for Gakpo because the timing was perfect – move now and they get a bargain, wait and they might not get him at all.
When an opportunity comes about that’s too good to miss, Liverpool make things happen. They’re otherwise prepared to wait.
And so it’s difficult to predict January. After all, someone else could suddenly pop up as an unbelievable signing. Maybe Jude Bellingham forces his way out of Borussia Dortmund early? We won’t hold our breath on that.

But Bellingham is another example of Liverpool’s attitude. They have a chance there to sign a world-class player, something they don’t find that often. Thus they will try to make it happen in the right moment, which will likely be the summer.
As for January, no one should hold their breath on a new signing. But as the Gakpo deal shows, no one should entirely rule it out, either.
