New Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo has the potential to become a ‘spectacular’ player during his time at the club.
That’s according to AZ Alkmaar head coach Pascal Jansen. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this week, Jansen outlined just how good he thinks Gakpo can become at Liverpool.
“Gakpo is a diamond. I met him in the Under 15 of PSV and already in the Academy he shone with his immense quality,” he explained.
“At just 23-years-old he was one of the stars of the Dutch championship and in Qatar. With the national team he was exceptional. At Klopp’s Liverpool he will amaze everyone: he can become a spectacular striker.”

Time to appreciate what we have
Well Reds, today’s the day. Cody Gakpo is now officially a Liverpool player. Welcome to the club, Cody!
Given the quick nature of the deal, and the fact that the Reds still really need a midfielder, it feels as though there hasn’t been enough excitement over Gakpo’s arrival.
So, let Jansen’s words be a reminder that we have a really special player here. Even before his brilliant displays in Qatar the £35m man was admired by many of the elite of European football.
Following his three goals at the World Cup, he was surely on the wish list of almost all of them.

Liverpool had to move quick to get Gakpo to Anfield and we should be thankful that we were able to.
It’s also significant that the forward arrives right at the start of the transfer window. He now has a little extra time to get to know his new teammates and bed into his surroundings.
Once he does that, hopefully we’ll start to see some of the magic that Jansen is referring to.
The hunt for a midfielder should go on for Liverpool regardless. But for now, let’s take a step back and appreciate this brilliant piece of business from the Reds.
