‘Really great’: Gakpo says he saw something ‘unbelievable’ on his first visit to Liverpool’s training ground

Cody Gakpo was impressed with Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre on his first visit to the facility this week.

The 23-year-old will become Jurgen Klopp’s latest addition when the transfer window opens on Sunday. And ahead of his registration with the Reds, Liverpool released a behind the scenes look at his first day on their YouTube channel.

Pottering around the training ground and meeting the likes of Klopp and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gakpo was clearly impressed.

“The first impression was really unbelievable. [The training centre is] Really big,” the Dutchman enthused. “Everything is here, the accommodation is really great. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the guys and starting working, and having a lot of fun.”

Gakpo settling in already

On first impression, Gakpo looks like an easy going, confident type. He didn’t look at all overawed visiting the Liverpool HQ for the first time. That bodes well for his Reds career.

Having come from being captain of his boyhood club, PSV Eindhoven, the forward is clearly well used to having to deal with pressure. He also obviously has a very strong character.

In a squad packed full of experienced internationals and leaders, Gakpo should settle in nicely.

Of course, he has international colleague Virgil van Dijk to help things along in that respect, too. The big man could be seen on Gakpo’s vlog, greeting him with a wide smile and a hug.

The new recruit also ran into Alexander-Arnold strolling through the training ground. There was a nice little interchange as the Liverpool right-back introduced himself to the Netherlands star.

A meeting with assistant manager Pep Lijnders looked lively as well. Speaking in their native tongue, they smiled and laughed their way through a first meeting in new surroundings.

So, from as much as you can tell from a carefully curated 10-minute video, it looks like Gakpo will fit right in at Liverpool.

Hopefully he can translate that into good performances on the pitch as soon as possible.
