PSV Eindhoven sent a message to Liverpool on Twitter after Cody Gakpo sealed his move to Anfield on Wednesday. They’re feeling emotional.
Liverpool completed their opening deal of the January transfer window on Wednesday as they signed Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman has been a superstar in the Eredivisie, winning Dutch Footballer of the Year last season.
He’s followed that up with nine goals and 12 assists in 14 league games this season. Gakpo has been sensational and, unsurprisingly, the key player in the PSV Eindhoven side.
Having come through their youth ranks, this was a tough departure for them. No wonder, then, that they sent a message to Liverpool on Twitter.
“Cody Gakpo, #ForeverEindhovenaar,” they wrote. “Take care of him, [Liverpool].”
They followed that with an emotional video detailing Gakpo’s time at the club. He’s not a player they’re going to forget about anytime soon.

Honestly, it’s great to see a new Liverpool signing be so well respected by the selling club. They don’t want to lose him but financial issues in Eindhoven have essentially forced their hand.
And that’s why Liverpool have pulled off such a great deal here. They’ve secured an elite talent – one who just shone at the World Cup – and he’s still only 23. There’s incredible potential here.
Especially as Gakpo can play across the forward line. Liverpool can develop him anyway they want, really, even if he’s naturally a left-winger. How that meshes with Luis Díaz is unclear right now – but the Reds will find a way.
Eindhoven, though, are as gutted as we would be if Trent Alexander-Arnold left the club. They’ve sold one of their own, a world-beating player, and a fundamental part of their team all in one.
All Liverpool can really say in response is that they will take good care of him.
