Liverpool will tell Jude Bellingham that he could be their next captain, according to one journalist. The Reds desperately want to sign him.

Liverpool face an incredible fight to sign Jude Bellingham. He’s the most in-demand player on the planet right now, given he almost certainly leaves Borussia Dortmund in 2023.

Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea all want to compete for Bellingham. This is unlikely to come down to purely financial competition, however.

Convincing Bellingham that he can have his best possible career at your club is key. He’ll make the move based on footballing reasons, rather than whoever can offer him the most money.

That’s a complicated thing but Liverpool appear to have an ace up their sleeve. Journalist Dean Jones believes they’ll tell Bellingham that he could become their next captain, following on from Jordan Henderson.

“I think one of the big selling points will be that he could become a future captain of Liverpool,” Jones told GiveMeSport. “I think that is a big carrot to dangle in front of him.

“Then it’s up to Bellingham and his family to weigh up exactly what is the best next step for him.”

Jude Bellingham as the next Liverpool captain

It’s certainly an interesting way of convincing a player. Liverpool also hold the role of captain in high regard – just listening to anyone talk about Henderson will tell you that.

But that’s also why we don’t believe Liverpool would actually promise this. Offering the captaincy to someone you’ve never worked with isn’t the way to go if you do actually value the role.

Yes, Bellingham is ‘sensational’, in the words of Daniel Sturridge, but we think Liverpool would want to work with him first. Perhaps the way to go is to suggest it’s possible, if he earns it. That could certainly work, as Bellingham’s professionalism is great enough.

But telling him it’s his if he signs? That just doesn’t sound right to us.
