Liverpool staff are very excited that Cody Gakpo is joining the club, according to reports. They love attributes of his.

This comes from the Athletic. They report that there’s excitement amongst the Liverpool staff at Kirkby as Cody Gakpo appears set to join.

News that Gakpo was on his way broke on Monday evening – and with great surprise. Manchester United were supposed to get the player, or at least were the reported leaders in a race. Liverpool were named as a watching club, really, rather than one determined to sign him.

But it’s the Reds who will get him. They’ll pay around £37m for the pleasure and it’s easy to see why, given the Athletic’s report.

They claim that while there’s an appreciation that he needs the right coaching, his attributes are already enough to get excited about. Primarily, it’s his speed on and off the ball that they love.

Gakpo can attack space in behind, he can run at players with the ball, and they love his mix of speed and direct running.

It’s a fantastic thing when the coaching staff are as excited as the fans. They’re getting exactly the kind of player they love to work with, after all.

Gakpo is certainly that. He’s got the versatility to learn several positions, the temperament that saw him captain PSV Eindhoven, and the pace that turns him into an instant threat.

To top it all off, he’s still only 23 – there’s a lot of room for development here, especially under a coaching staff with such a remarkable track record. Getting that for £37m is actually quite incredible, even by Liverpool’s standards.

We’ll start counting down the days, then. Gakpo has all the traits to be a true star at Liverpool and we’re thrilled that he’s on his way to Anfield.
