Report: Club choose their replacement after conceding 21-year-old could join Liverpool imminently

Benfica have their Enzo Fernández replacement in mind, according to reports. It comes as Liverpool increase their efforts to sign him.

This comes from O Jogo. They claim that Benfica want Carlos Alcaraz to replace Enzo Fernández in January.

The midfielder is another Argentine, currently playing for Racing Club in the country. At just 20, he’s one for the future – but then, people said the same about Enzo in the summer.

Benfica have actually scouted the player for some time. Their efforts pre-date the World Cup, for instance, where Enzo’s reputation exploded in Europe.

But they’ve had to increase their desire to sign Alcaraz after several of the game’s giants targetted Enzo. He’s now expected to leave Benfica in January, which was never part of the plan. His £106m release clause forces their hand, however.

Liverpool are amongst those applying pressure on Enzo and Benfica. Manchester United and Chelsea also want him and one of the trio could well meet his release caluse soon.

So soon, in fact, that Enzo is expected to sit out Benfica vs Braga this weekend so as not to risk an injury.

This one is seriously heating up, then. Enzo became such an incredible talent at the World Cup that teams are queuing up to sign him, even at his ridiculous release clause.

But perhaps that’s just the going rate for what Enzo now is. He’s a 21-year-old who’s proven at the absolute highest level, after all. The only downside is that he’s only done it for five World Cup games and five months with Benfica.

Still, he looks practically perfect. We’d love Liverpool to sign him – on the condition that it doesn’t jeopardise a move for Jude Bellingham. Perhaps that’s too big of an ask but either way, the Reds have a massive decision to make.
