Pundit Craig Burley believes Cody Gakpo to Liverpool is like a transfer straight out of 2012. The Dutchman should complete the deal soon.
Liverpool surprised everyone this week by striking a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. Manchester United were thought to be the ones leading the race – but the Reds have jumped the queue.
Gakpo will sign for Liverpool for around £37m, per the Athletic, and everything is just about done and dusted. The Reds moved quicky to sign the player after an injury to Luis Díaz that could keep him out until March.
But this is no knee-jerk transfer. In fact, pundit Craig Burley believes Liverpool are striking an incredible bargain with this deal.
“I look at this player and I think it’s one of the great bits of business,” he told ESPN. “I really do – I keep looking at the fee and thinking ‘no, this is not 2022. This is 2012, 2010, 2009!’.
“The guy’s 23, I look at this guy who could play in several positions if need be and could adapt. He’s got the physical attributes. Yes, he’s got to step those up and it will be a step up for him.
“We know he can score goals, has those attributes I talked about, and we know he’s flexible. And £37m? You go to the Championship and get somebody who’s had a one-season wonder and you’re paying £35m+ for somebody.”
Cody Gakpo to Liverpool
The Reds certainly have found a wonderful deal here. Gakpo has every single trait you’d want from a signing and £37m feels like a steal.
He’s capable of playing multiple positions, has the physicality to always offer a threat, and is still only 23. Liverpool could turn Gakpo into a phenomenon. At least, that’s how things look right now.
With the right coaching, that £37m will truly look like phenomenal business. Burley is absolutely right about that.
