Virgil van Dijk appeared to hint that Liverpool were signing someone new before news broke about Cody Gakpo. PSV Eindhoven then confirmed an agreement last night.
PSV Eindhoven confirmed late last night that they had an agreement with Liverpool for Cody Gakpo. It was a shock deal – Manchester United were thought to be Gakpo’s destination.
But the Reds jumped in to make things happen. We’re thrilled about the news as the 23-year-old could go on to be a superstar. He’s the reigning Dutch Footballer of the Year, after all, and has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie appearances this season.
Again, though, this is a surprise. Liverpool were always said to like Gakpo but we can’t remember them ever being labelled frontrunners. Certainly not as United were.

This one may not have come out of the blue for everyone, however. Certainly not for Virgil van Dijk.
Virgil van Dijk appeared to hint at Cody Gakpo
Van Dijk gave a very uncharacteristic interview last night where he actively talked about new signings. Liverpool are usually very good at talking up the group, rather than outright calling for new players. Especially after a very solid win away from home.
The Dutchman made it clear that he would welcome new additions, though.
“Hopefully the injured players can come back soon, and hopefully we can welcome some new players at our football club,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo.

“We will see. I think that quality is always welcome at Liverpool.”
Well, if anyone would know, it’s Gakpo’s captain at international level. The two were at the World Cup together, playing integral roles as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals.
We imagine there was some discussion about the future, then – and it seems Van Dijk is all ready to welcome him to Liverpool.
