Liverpool are now ready to sign Enzo Fernández before Real Madrid can act, according to reports. Benfica won’t sell him cheap, though.
This comes from Marca. They claim that Liverpool are now ‘ready’ to make their move for Enzo Fernández as they see him as the right piece to fix their midfield.
Importantly, Real Madrid aren’t so ready to move. They want to wait for the summer, where they see the Argentine as an alternative to Jude Bellingham. If they fail to sign the Englishman, that’s when they want Enzo.
Benfica don’t wish to let go of their player easily, though. Marca believe that they’ll want at least £61m to sell Enzo – someone who only arrived in the summer for £10m.

The interesting thing here is that Enzo is surely Liverpool’s alternative to Bellingham, too. So if they’re ready to sign him, it suggests one of two possibilities.
The first is that they’re not getting Bellingham and know it already. If that’s the case, it makes sense to move for Enzo now and rule out finishing with either. That would feel like a disaster.
The other is that Liverpool want both. Now, that’s obviously the dream scenario and one we’re praying for. It would mean a £200m outlay on midfield in 2023, however, and we just find that impossible to believe. The Reds have never spent money in that way.
At the same time, Liverpool may feel they’re slipping behind Manchester City and that drastic action is necessary. Spending enormously on the world’s best young midfielders – Bellingham and Enzo certainly feel like that – would be exactly what they need to keep up the pace.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner are all out of contract in 2023, as well. That would free up wage space and squad space for two major signings. So on that level, we can see it.
But again, £200m on a pair of signings? It’s just not very ‘Liverpool’ – or maybe just not very ‘FSG’.
