Here’s how we think Liverpool should spend the ‘outrageous’ transfer funds that Jamie Carragher predicts for 2023. The Reds could mean business.

Jamie Carragher predicts a massive amount of money available for Liverpool in the 2023 transfer windows. Or at least, he expects Jurgen Klopp to ask for it.

“There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool’s owners, ‘I need £200m-£250m to spend in the summer’,” Carragher told Sky Sports last week.

“That sounds like an outrageous figure, but that is what Man Utd and Chelsea spent last summer. These are the figures that Liverpool’s rivals are spending.”

Carragher goes on to say that he feels that kind of spending is why FSG are after investment in Liverpool. The idea is there to spend that much – let’s see if they can get the money together.

But how would Liverpool spend £200m? We think it’s actually quite obvious. Two players, a massive amount of talent, and future-proofing the side.

Liverpool transfer funds in 2023

There’s not much doubt that Liverpool want Jude Bellingham. Recent reports, like that from the Mirror, claim they lead the race for the £130m man. Yes, £130m – that’s most of the budget gone right there.

But it’s what makes sense for Liverpool. They don’t need a goalkeeper as they have their present and future covered. It’s the same at full-back and centre-back. Top players with enough youth to keep them sorted for years.

Similarly, they don’t need a new forward. Darwin Nunez is only 23, Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz are in their prime years, while Mohamed Salah has enough in the tank to be the superstar for a bit longer. And there’s now talk that Roberto Firmino could renew his contract. Liverpool may look for a striker in 2024 but there’s no call for next year.

So that leaves midfield – and Liverpool do need signings. They need them anyway, given Jordan Henderson and Thiago are getting on, while Harvey Elliott is still finding his feet in the position. In terms of a midfielder who could be a star in one or two years, the Reds lack people.

Especially as Naby Kieta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract in 2023. They will likely leave and create an enormous gap in the squad. Thus Bellingham would be absolute perfection.

We wouldn’t stop there, though. Liverpool should go for elite quality in the transfer windows, signing Enzo Fernández, too. Marca claim the Reds want him and that he’d cost around £61m. In other words, the rest of the budget.

But he’s worth it. With Bellingham and Enzo, Liverpool would have the present and future of their midfield. The two of them could conceivably play with Elliot down the line, too, while also having the quality and versatility to play with Thiago and Henderson.

Thus we don’t see any other necessary signings. The quality these two would bring, as well as the position they play, is exactly what Liverpool need. Sign both for £200m in a massive statement and the Reds won’t regret it.
