AC Milan are wary of Liverpool’s interest in Ismael Bennacer, as they enter into contract talks with the midfielder.
That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Writing for SOS Fanta, the transfer expert claims that Milan have already offered a new deal to Bennacer, who’s current one runs out in 2024.
However, Liverpool are said to be ‘the most dangerous tempter’ aiming to ruin the Italians’ plans.
Jurgen Klopp is said to ‘appreciate’ Bennacer, and has him on his list of midfield targets for 2023. Romano confirms that the Algerian is joined by all three of Enzo Fernandez, Sofyan Amrabat and Jude Bellingham in being a target for Liverpool.

Bennacer is reportedly yet to make a decision on the contract offer from his current team. It’s claimed that ‘it will take time’ to come to any agreement.
In the meantime, it seems as though Liverpool will continue to hover. Romano claims that Milan’s attempt to tie their player down is a direct result of the Reds’ interest.
Liverpool look to hijack contract talks
This is an interesting little update from the renowned Romano. What isn’t included in this particular report though, is what effect a new contract being signed would have on Liverpool’s interest.
Is Klopp only attracted to the signing because he has a limited time on his deal, or would he want to sign Bennacer regardless?

At this juncture, that would now look like being the key question. Given that the 25-year-old still has a healthy 18-months on his deal, you’d have to say that it’s the latter.
In which case, Milan’s efforts may not make all that much difference here. If Liverpool are interested in Bennacer, they’ll still make their play to sign him whatever the outcome of these recent talks.
He’d look like a good fit for Liverpool’s midfield. Robust and energetic, he has even been called ‘world-class’ by Serie A journalist Mina Rzouki.
Those kind of players don’t usually come cheap. With Bennacer’s contract situation in mind, he may be available for a knockdown fee. If the extension is signed, that fee will likely become higher. Maybe only then will we find out just how highly Klopp rates the former Arsenal man.
