Manchester City could start ‘special’ Rico Lewis against Liverpool on Thursday, according to reports. It could be a big test for the kid.
This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that Rico Lewis is in contention to start for Manchester City on Thursday.
City will host Liverpool in the EFL Cup as club football resumes after the World Cup. However, it’s unclear how many senior players will be available for each side.
Liverpool certainly won’t have Ibrahima Konaté back after he featured in the final for France. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson should be back, but we don’t yet know if they’re ready to play.
City, though, have bigger problems. Liverpool only actually had seven players at the World Cup but their hosts on Thursday had 15. Only Bayern Munich had more, in fact.
That could apparently see Rico Lewis get only his third senior start. The teenager did get the nod in both Champions League and EFL Cup games this season – but Liverpool could provide a massive test.

We don’t yet know how strong Jurgen Klopp will go for this one. There’s a real chance, though, that he puts out close to his best XI in an attempt to find rhythm after the break.
Well, best available XI, anyway. Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota are both out, meaning Darwin Nunez could be out on the left. That would put him up against Lewis, should Pep Guardiola start him.
It doesn’t sound as though Guardiola would fear playing him against Nunez, either. The City boss described Lewis as having ‘something special’, per the Independent, earlier this season.
If he does end up playing right in front of the Uruguayan on Thursday, that statement is well and truly getting put to the test.
