PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted star play Cody Gakpo could leave the club in January.

Speaking with Voetbal International, the former Manchester United player has seemingly resigned to the fact that the 23-year-old will leave the Dutch outfit – and probably during the winter window.

“If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now,” he said.

“You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”

According to 90min, van Nistelrooy’s former club, the Red Devils, are leading the race to secure the attacker’s services, although journalist Di Marzio claims Liverpool remain in contention. PSV now expect to lose the player in January.

The interest surrounding Gakpo before the World Cup was already massive.

However, after an emphatic tournament, the 23-year-old has to be one of the most in-demand players in European football.

Out in Qatar, in each of Holland’s group games, the winger netted in all three fixtures. Although he failed to score in any subsequent matches, Gakpo demonstrated he has the ability to perform with the best at the highest level.

Whilst the Dutchman came close to a move over the summer, it now seems highly likely he makes the move away from the Eredivisie in January.

Hailed as ‘incredible’ by commentator Matteo Bonetti, it is easy to see why teams from all across Europe are interested in signing the attacking star.

At the moment, United seem the most likely destination. However, Liverpool remain firmly in the race. However, with no clear answer, we will have to wait and see what happens over the winter window.
