Enzo Fernández’s World Cup final was one to remember. The reported Liverpool target may have justified his incredible release clause.
Record, A Bola, and O Jogo all suggest Liverpool want Enzo Fernández this year. After watching the World Cup final, it’s incredibly easy to see why.
Argentina won the tournament, of course, with Enzo playing a key role in midfield. But that might be understating it – he was phenomenal as his country beat France last night.

Opta summed it up in a Tweet: Enzo led all players in the final for touches (118), passes (77) and tackles (10). They also point out that he’s the first player to register double-digits for tackles in a World Cup final since 2006.
To do that at 21 years old is simply remarkable. Enzo wasn’t even a first-choice player when the tournament kicked off but he forced his way into Lionel Scaloni’s plans. Once he was in, he was vital.
And he did that all on a yellow card. Enzo received a booking in first-half stoppage time but Scaloni trusted him throughout the second half an extra-time. That’s 75 minutes in the biggest game of your career on a yellow card. And he thrived.
Enzo Fernández’s World Cup final
Enzo is expected to leave Benfica in 2023 but all reports suggest teams would need to meet his £103m release clause for a January transfer. Well, that looked like far too much a month ago. Now it suddenly looks like a decent price, given Jude Bellingham will likely cost even more.

There’s little doubt now that if Liverpool miss out on Bellingham, Enzo is the player to go for. We’re not even sure we’d be too disappointed with that.
Though, until either moves, we’ll be hoping that Liverpool get greedy and pull of something truly special. Both in the Reds’ midfield? The team would be unstoppable.
