‘I know him’: Eddie Howe suggests 21-year-old Liverpool target is going to be really expensive to buy

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe responded to claims his club could move for Enzo Fernández in 2023. Liverpool reportedly like the player.

There will be plenty of talk about Enzo Fernández coming out of that World Cup. There was a lot already but the 21-year-old put in a magnificent campaign, culminating in the Young Player of the Tournament award.

And, of course, the World Cup trophy itself.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was asked about the player in a press conference on Monday. Would the Magpies look to sign Enzo after his performances? Howe doesn’t sound confident.

“I’m aware of him, & I know him,” he said, per Craig Hope. “But I think the transfer fee might be quite lumpy!”

Enzo certainly will cost a small fortune. That doesn’t appear to put Liverpool off, however, with Record, A Bola, and O Jogo all linking the Reds with him.

The midfielder is currently at Benfica, of course, and they hope to hold onto him. Until the summer, at least – a January move would cost the player’s release clause, which is £103m.

So yes, that’s probably too much for most clubs. We’d also question whether Enzo would move to Newcastle right now, given the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid have him in their sights.

What’s very clear, though, is that whoever signs Enzo is getting one of the best young midfielders on the planet. Jude Bellingham might be the only one under 22 that you’d put ahead of him. That, of course, makes the Argentine one of the most desirable players around.

We’d absolutely love to see him at Liverpool. Naturally, Bellingham is our no.1 choice, along with everyone else, but Enzo would be a phenomenal addition to the middle. Both would be a dream, but we’d happily settle for one.
