Liverpool target and Argentina international Enzo Fernandez has been crowned the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament.
The 21-year-old has been absolutely incredible out in Qatar, and after his side lifted the trophy earlier tonight, it was revealed the midfielder had picked up the prestigious award.
There were numerous contenders who could’ve been considered fair winners if selected. The likes of England’s Jude Bellingham, France’s Aurelien Tchouameni, Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez were all excellent for their nations.
At 23-years-old, Kylian Mbappe could technically be included here, but it seems he is considered too established to be in contention for a junior award.
This is an exciting prospect for Liverpool fans, as according to La Capital in Argentina, the Reds have an agreement in principle to sign the Benfica star. However, this claim has recently been contested by 90min.
Fernandez seems to be the real deal
Prior to the World Cup, Fernandez had never started an international fixture for Argentina. Now, coming away from Qatar, he has ten national team caps to his name.
After the first two group games, the 21-year-old had shown Lionel Scaloni enough to start him in each subsequent match – having become a crucial part of the midfield.
However, whilst this proved to Jurgen Klopp that he would be a brilliant addition to his squad, the biggest issue with his breakout World Cup campaign is that his price could rise astronomically.
The likes of Real Madrid have also been touted with interest, meaning Benfica can use this to their advantage when it comes to negotiations. This is particularly the case, given Lionel Messi has hailed the youngster as a ‘spectacular’ player.

There is varied speculation surrounding a release clause for Fernandez. It was first reported that it would take £103m to lure the youngster away from Liga Portugal. Following this, reports emerged claiming the fee was actually just £77m.
If this appears to be the case, Liverpool would likely make an immediate swoop for the Argentine star. However, if this supposed release clause doesn’t exist, the Reds could be in for a long round of talks.
