Report: Liverpool open to repeating deal similar to disastrous Arthur Melo

Liverpool could strike a deal very similar to their Arthur Melo move, according to reports. The Reds are now linked with Weston McKennie.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that Liverpool are now open to signing Weston McKennie on loan from Juventus.

The American starred at the World Cup this winter but could move on in January. Liverpool wish to bolster their midfield options, too, and McKennie could be a good temporary solution.

After all, next summer is when Liverpool will likely sign their long-term midfield options. Jude Bellingham tops the list by all accounts – but the chances of signing him in January are essentially zero. The same goes for players like Enzo Fernández or Moisés Caicedo.

Thus McKennie would be a stop-gap signing. It’s potentially a great deal, though it brings up comparisons to one disaster of a move.

Liverpool and their Arthur Melo deal

Liverpool did sign a midfielder on loan from Juventus already this season, of course. Arthur Melo arrived right at the end of the summer transfer window – and it hasn’t exactly worked out.

Arthur wasn’t fit when he arrived and required time to build himself up. That largely came over an international break not long after his arrival – where Liverpool coaches called him ‘first-class’ for his efforts.

Before then, the Brazilian managed just 13 minutes for the Reds. He’s played zero minutes since, however, as he picked up a long-term injury over that break. We might see him again this season but few would be shocked if the deal was cut short.

The deal has been a disaster but Liverpool clearly aren’t too put off. They’re still happy to make a temporary signing, it seems, and one from Juventus. The big difference here is that McKennie should be good to go from the off – and he’d have to be, with only a few months of the season left.

We’re cautious about this one, then. The comparisons to the Arthur deal aren’t too strong, or at least it shouldn’t become a disaster in the same way. Still, McKennie is available for a reason and we’re not entirely sure Liverpool will find a loan deal that makes a good impact.

Arthur certainly hasn’t.
